These Afterschool Activities are offered in addition to our regular Aftercare program, which runs every day from 3:00 to 5:30pm. Students enrolled in our Aftercare program may participate in these activities but must sign up separately (any additional fees are noted below).

We are all looking forward to providing a fun, safe, creative, and loving environment for your children to enjoy at the end of the school day. In addition to our Aftercare staff we will have instructors coming in throughout the year to offer additional programming to complement our Aftercare program. We are also grateful for our parent and grandparent volunteers who have organized ski club, taken children ice skating, and taught our students chess, among other things. Parents are always welcome to share their time and passions with our students and are encouraged to contact Billy at billy@friendsschoolportland.org if you would like to lead or assist with an after school activity.

All afterschool activities (unless otherwise noted) begin directly after school. A healthy snack will be provided from 3:00-3:15 and offerings will begin in earnest at 3:15.  Please check on individual activity descriptions for ending times. Parents should pick up their children at the activities ending time and sign-out their child in the Aftercare log book outside the main office. If students are not picked up they will be brought to Aftercare and charged additionally, unless they are already on Aftercare roster for that day.

If you have any questions, please contact Billy Maley.

Most sign-ups will take place at school and will be located on the bulletin board near the school office. After an initial trial period, usually the first session, children and families will be expected to commit for the full term of the activity. Generally, we need enough students to cover the staffing costs of the activity. Please sign up in advance!

This is crucial especially as we bring in outside specialists who are traveling to FSP. If we do not have enough sign-ups, cancellations will be announced in the weekly e-bulletin and posted on the sign up sheet/bulletin board area. Most activity fees are based on $11/hour per participant for those not already signed up in Aftercare (plus additional materials fee for certain activities) and are billed on a monthly basis. Activities are open to all grades, unless otherwise noted in the descriptions that follow.

Additions, cancellations, and deviations from the schedule below will be announced in the weekly e-bulletin.

In the vein of "The Unexplainable Disappearance of Mars Patel," students will work as a group to generate their own material, then record and edit their own radio play. Zero previous experience or gear necessary, just an interest in fabricating from the ground-up an original audio-story to entertain listeners of all ages. We are making arrangements for our performance session to be recorded at a professional-grade Portland-based studio off-site, but all other sessions will be at FSP. Led by Desi Van Til with technical support from Sean Mewshaw. Mondays 3:00-4:15, 12/2/19-2/10/20. Grades 5-8.

There is no instructor with this program, so ice skating experience is required for this activity. Children who do not know how to skate can come with a parent or responsible adult who is available to assist them during our time there. Ice skates are available, but having your own skates is strongly recommended because of our limited ice time. Please note that students are only charged for this activity if they are unaccompanied by a parent and riding on the school bus. *Space is limited on the bus so only the first 14 signups will be accepted.
