Early Childhood

In our early childhood programs, children learn who they are and how to be part of a community.  Children’s own natural sense of curiosity and wonder form the basis of learning and play.  Children explore their communities and their places in them.  Growing into newfound independence, children learn to take care of their needs, to communicate with one another, and to offer their unique gifts to the classroom and school communities.  Seeing the light in ourselves and others is modeled and practiced.  Flexibility, kindness, cooperation, and self-advocacy are cornerstones of children's work together.

Preschool

Essential Question: What does it mean to be part of a group?

Through open-ended play, indoors and out, children explore passions and learn to work with one another– to express their needs, to enter play, to compromise.  Visible to the teachers, but seamlessly woven into the children’s experience, are activities and conversations that extend social emotional learning, executive functioning, language and literacy development, mathematical thinking, scientific and social inquiry, art, music, and physical development.

Kindergarten

Essential Question: How do we care for ourselves, each other, and the world?

One important focus of the Kindergarten program is helping children develop a sense of place through immersion in nature and the communities of which we are a part.  Kindergarteners spend Thursdays and Fridays in our outdoor classroom in the woods on our property.  Spending time in a natural setting leads to richly extended units of study that support students’ foundational development of language and literacy, mathematical thinking, scientific reasoning, and creative expression.  The reverence and excitement generated build a sense of stewardship and connection in our students.
